LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) Treatment in India

The Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a surgical technique used to remove abnormal cervical tissue that may lead to cancer. The cervix, located at the top of the vagina, opens into the uterus. LEEP is typically performed in a doctor’s clinic or a hospital.

Pre-Surgery Preparations

Investigations Required

Before undergoing LEEP, patients should adhere to the following guidelines:

Get Opinion From Doctor

    • Avoid Sexual Activity: Do not have sex two days before the surgery.
    • No Creams or Douching: Avoid using creams in or around the vagina and do not douche.
    • Medication: Take prescribed medications two hours before the procedure.

    During the Surgery

    Procedure Steps

    1. Medication: The doctor will administer medications to prevent discomfort during the procedure.
    2. Empty Bladder: Patients should use the restroom to empty their bladder just before the procedure.
    3. Remove Metal: Ensure there are no metal objects, including piercings, on the body. Inform the medical team of any metal that cannot be removed.
    4. Preparation: After undressing from the waist down, cover yourself with a paper sheet. A grounding pad will be placed on your thighs.
    5. Positioning: Lie on the examination table and place your feet in stirrups.
    6. Speculum Insertion: A speculum will be inserted to open the vagina for a clear view.
    7. Cleaning: The cervix will be cleaned with an iodine solution.
    8. Examination: The doctor will use a colposcope, a magnifying instrument, to examine the cervix.
    9. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia will be given to numb the cervix.
    10. Tissue Removal: A wire loop will be used to remove the abnormal tissues.

    Hospital Stay Duration

LEEP is an outpatient procedure, so patients are typically discharged on the same day. However, they will need to return for routine follow-up appointments.

    Possible Risks

Common risks associated with LEEP include:

    • Heavy Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Residual Abnormal Tissues

    Post-Operative Care

    1. Avoid Insertions: Do not insert anything into the vagina, including tampons, and avoid sexual intercourse or touching for six weeks to allow proper healing.
    2. Diet: You can follow a normal diet immediately after the procedure.

Understanding the LEEP procedure, from pre-surgery preparations to post-operative care, helps patients manage their treatment and recovery effectively.
